5/6 science -Taught by Mrs. Janet Highman We begin the year by studying the amazing process of photosynthesis. We also examine five important plant families and learn to identify composite flowers. The students create a colorful poster when they give their tree reports. They also create an insect project that shows all eight of the common orders of insects. In the area of health, students will make their own illustrated booklet of safety tips. We also devote a class to basic first aid that students should know. Studying the immune system and the brain gives students a deep appreciation for their Creator. They will make a model of the inner ear and draw and label the parts of the eye. We take a look at the earth and its natural resources, which leads into the study of simple chemistry. We have fun with some everyday items, discovering which ones are acids and which are bases with our homemade litmus paper! Space travel takes us on a tour of our sun and the planets. Students will learn how to locate familiar constellations and learn a bit about them. They will make a booklet containing their report of an astronaut of their choice, a space vehicle, and a page for each planet with a colored picture and description of each. Questions?
