5/6 English Class Description This English class is designed to teach students the parts of speech in a fun and lively manner. Capitalization and punctuation rules will also be taught as students make their own booklets with examples. We will read through the first half of Little Pilgrim’s Progress, by Helen L. Taylor, as Christian faces such places as the Slough of Despond and Vanity Fair. A study guide will aid in following Christian’s adventures and in pointing out the various Christian themes and struggles in the book. Together during class, we will read Treasures of the Snow, by Patricia St. John. Throughout this book the author paints a wonderful portrait of forgiveness to which the students can readily relate. Students will also work with word trees throughout the year, learning various prefixes and root words, which will help them to decipher other words they may not know. Editor-in-Chief will give students practice in editing, while selected spelling words will help students learn spelling rules for those hard-to-remember words. Rewriting Aesop’s Fables in their own words, students will learn to imitate good writing. They are required to use up to three vocabulary words that are found in the fable. In addition, they come up with their own application and Bible verse to go with the fable. Texts used: Easy Grammar 5 -workbook Daily Grams 5 Little Pilgrim’s Progress by Helen L.
